Howtown & Hallin Fell Circular

Car-free Days Out

A popular and exhilarating hike to one of the best viewpoints in the Northern Lakes.

Take the UB1 to Howtown and follow the Ullswater Way along the shoreline, walking through peaceful lakeside woodland – a gentle start before the climb.

At Sandwick, leave the lakeshore and follow the path inland towards St Peter’s Church in Martindale. From here, begin the steady ascent up Hallin Fell, where you’ll be rewarded with stunning 360° views across Ullswater and the surrounding fells.

Descend on the southern side of the fell and loop back towards Howtown. Finish with a well-earned coffee and cake at the Howtown Hotel Tea Rooms just a short walk from the bus stop.

Book a local guide

If you’d like to head up high onto the fells, why not book an expert local guide. Our friends a Hiking Highs are a superb team of qualified Mountain Leaders who are a fountain of knowledge about the Lake District valleys & fells.
