Lowther Castle Loop

Car-free Days Out

A river, a fell, a village pub and a castle café - this circular walk is one of the highlights of the Ullswater Way.

Take the UB2 to Lowther Castle and set off along the castle walls before heading through woodland to the River Lowther – a peaceful stretch with chances to spot wildlife.

Cross Crookwath Bridge and continue through meadows to Helton, then climb up onto Askham Fell. A short detour here rewards you with wide views over Ullswater and the Helvellyn range. Descend into Askham village for a well-earned stop, then follow woodland paths back to Lowther Castle.

Finish with a coffee or homemade scone at the café… and enjoy the ease of hopping straight back on the bus! For more information on this route, visit Ullswater Way post.

Book a local guide
