Parliament Backs Community Transport Success in the Ullswater Valley

In January 2026, Tim Farron MP tabled Early Day Motion 2624 to recognise the work of Sustainable and Integrated Transport for Ullswater (SITU) — a volunteer-led initiative transforming rural travel in one of England’s most scenic valleys.

Early Day Motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted by MPs to put an issue on record and draw attention to it, even though they are rarely debated in the House of Commons. They act much like a parliamentary petition, allowing other MPs to show support by adding their signatures.

EDM 2624 commends the outstanding work of SITU, particularly the success of its Ullswater Bus service, which carried over 5,500 passengers in 2025, up from 3,669 in 2024. The motion highlights the contribution of volunteers, donors and local partners in keeping the service running and calls on the Government and local authorities to support community-led transport schemes such as those run by SITU that boost sustainability, connectivity and rural economic resilience.

This parliamentary nod is a huge boost for SITU, showing Parliamentary recognition of the vital role that SITU plays in reducing car dependency and improving accessibility across our rural part of the Lake District World Heritage site.”
