Situ is now a charity

We are delighted to announce that SITU (Sustainable and Integrated Transport for Ullswater) is now officially registered as a charity in England and Wales, with the charity number 1214271. Founded and led by residents from the Ullswater parishes in the Lake District, SITU is driven by a shared vision: to see a sustainable and integrated transport system in the Ullswater valley that benefits residents, local businesses, and visitors alike. This vision aligns with the unique needs of the area and the responsibilities that come with the Lake District’s World Heritage status.

SITU is working collaboratively with local communities, farmers, businesses, landowners, local authorities and other key agencies to develop and support a variety of transport initiatives. These include safer, more accessible pedestrian and cycle routes, reliable public transport options that are suited to rural roads. SITU aims to make it easy, cost-effective, and appealing for people to travel to and around Ullswater in more sustainable ways.

Charitable status enables SITU to build long-term, community-led solutions that reduce environmental impact, enhance safety, and improve access to and within the valley. From improved connections between Penrith and Ullswater to the development of family-friendly cycling networks and bus services, the charity seeks to support residents and inspire visitors to make greener transport choices. With this milestone, SITU is now positioned to help make Ullswater a national flagship for sustainable rural transport, preserving the valley’s beauty and securing its future.
