The Ullswater Bus: Pilot Service

Through our community initiative, Stagecoach is running a pilot Ullswater Bus service this year, 2023, on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays connecting holiday accommodation around the valley with destinations such as Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Lowther Castle, Ullswater Steamers and onward transport services already in place.

The service is being provided as part of our drive for more sustainable transport and reduced private vehicle traffic in the Ullswater Valley; improving connections between where people are and where they wish to be within the valley.

Leave the car, take the bus!

The 16-seater service runs between 1st July and 29th October and below you will find links to the routes and timetable information.

The new Ullswater Bus services run morning and afternoon covering locations within the following three routes:

Operated by Stagecoach as a pilot this year the Ullswater Bus serves both visitors and local residents and trips are priced at £2 single, £4 return, under 5s free. Concessionary fares are supported. Wheelchair space available. USB sockets at every seat.

In addition combined tickets for Ullswater Steamers and other Stagecoach services are available on board and the service is be timed to connect with the existing 508 services where possible.

A successful pilot will mean we can look at running a 7-day service for the Easter – October period next year.

Let the bus take the fuss!

The Ullswater Bus is a 16 seater mini bus service, operated by Stagecoach, connecting holiday accommodation around the Ullswater valley with destinations such as Pooley Bridge, Lowther Castle, Ullswater Steamers, Howtown and onward transport services already in place. It is part of a drive for more sustainable transport and reduced private vehicle traffic in the area.

This year’s service consists of three routes, see map above. This service is a pilot. We will consider more routes next year if the pilot is a success. The bus will stop on the A592 and B5320 at existing stops for the 508 service. Otherwise, on the side roads, the bus stops at the main centres of accommodation (campsites, holiday parks, hotels) and at attractions. In addition, at the discretion of the driver, you can ask the bus to stop anywhere on the route if it is safe to do so.

See timetable above. We have one bus available this year so the timetable is based on the runs that one bus is capable of making. If the pilot is a success, we would like to run a more frequent service with more than one bus next year. If you would like a better service, help make the pilot a success!

£2 for a single journey, £4 return. Children under 5 are free. Concessionary fares are supported. We will consider discounted tickets for children over 5 if the pilot is a success.

Tickets can be bought on board the bus, from Ullswater Steamers, or on board other Stagecoach services. Also via the Stagecoach website and app.

The fares are priced per journey. We will look at the possibility of other fare combinations next year if the pilot is a success. You can, however, buy a single ticket that will entitle you to travel on two or more of the Ullswater Bus, the Ullswater Steamers and other Stagecoach services.

No. This facility is not available this year. This is something we can discuss with Stagecoach if the pilot is a success.
